"They don’t know where the hell they’re going."

April 25, 2007

said retired Marine Gen. John J. “Jack” Sheehan, a former top NATO commander in a recent interview to the Washington Post. This is how he reasoned his denial to accept an offer to be the new inter agency tsar to the White House, responsible for overseeing the war effort as ajoint project of the Pentagon, State department and other agencies. At least 2 other top brass officials have declined such an offer, citing the unwillingness to get involved in misguided policy.
The administration is madly scrambling to find someone, anyone, to give it a new leadership and possibly a new vision of how to conduct the war.Its inability to do is is very tellingly revealed by the unwillingness of its own top brass to step up to their role and offer some new strategy for the conflict.

Incredibly striking is the phrase “war czar”. What better way to promote a reputation for war-mongering than to evoke the memory of the czars, many of whom quelled political dissent with violence. The US renamed the “Department of War” the “Department of Defense” specifically to cast its military as a defensive response unit. On another note, one reason no general will take this position is that he will invariably be blamed when Bush’s senseless policies inevitably fail.
